An Immigration Department spokeswoman said it was handling a case involving the accident and would immediately follow up with the Office of the Commissioner of China’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Hong Kong, and the country’s consulate in Melbourne.

“The department has provided assistance and advice in accordance with the family’s request,” she said.

Any Hong Kong residents in need of help while overseas could contact the department via its 24-hour hotline 1868, the spokeswoman added.

An Australian newspaper said the other victims were from Taiwan, with their families rushing to the country on Friday night after learning of the accident.

Police in Victoria said they had revealed details of the accident a day later because of difficulties in determining how many people had died due to the nature of the crash.

Local authorities said the victims comprised four foreign workers and their employer, an Australian woman in her 60s, who was driving at the time of the accident.

Meanwhile in Hong Kong, a 42-year-old Maserati driver was arrested in Tsim Sha Tsui after allegedly running over a 54-year-old man lying on the ground.

The incident was one of two fatal accidents police were investigating on Saturday.

The force said the driver was travelling along Salisbury Road towards Hung Hom when the incident happened at 2.12am near the junction of Mody Lane.

The victim, who sustained serious head injuries, was certified dead at the scene, police said.

The driver was arrested on suspicion of dangerous driving causing death and failing to provide a breath specimen for screening. He has been detained for further inquiries.

Hours before the accident, a 62-year-old man was killed in a separate incident after he lost control of his car while driving along Sha Tau Kok Road – Lung Yeuk Tau in the direction of Sheung Shui.

The vehicle struck seven railings and several water barriers, before ramming into a flower bed and two traffic signs.

The man was taken to North District Hospital in an unconscious state and certified dead at 9.39pm.
