One of my favourite things about shopping in Hong Kong is that you can find great fashion in the most unexpected places. Take Rise Commercial Building (5-11 Granville Circuit, Tsim Sha Tsui) - hidden in an alleyway off Granville Road.
I expected something similar to Island Beverly in Causeway Bay, with little boutiques selling homegrown and locally made clothing. But Rise has more than that. Not only are there many more boutiques, but the merchandise is a great mixture of clothing, jewellery and accessories, footwear, leather-goods and vintage items.
My favourites included Dreamscape (Shop 125, 1/F, tel: 3692 5200), for a good mix of new and vintage items, including new clothing made from retro 50s and 60s fabric, plus vintage bags and jewellery at bargain prices. There were metal mesh evening bags that ranged in price from HK$300 to HK$500.
Down the hall, I bumped into student Yummi (pictured top) at Walawala (Shop 23, 1/F, tel: 3428 3633). Liking her sporty yet edgy ensemble, I wandered into the store and found long cardigans, soft jersey tees, parkas and cotton dresses all imported from South Korea. There was a range of blouson parkas - huge for the autumn - that were a bargain at less than HK$200 each.
I found a few stores that also stocked basics with a twist. After a friendly welcome by stylish Suki (right), I went into her store, Muse (two shops in Rise, Shop 403 and Shop 433, 4/F, tel: 3152 4884), to find pieces featuring a basic palette of black, navy, white, mustard and grey with unusual details such as ties, drapes and tucks. There were also fabric sling-bags, necklaces and belts.
Another shop that had tailored clothing with a twist was Aisle (Shop 302, 3/F, 2721 6933). There were high-waisted pencil skirts, silkscreen printed tees, tailored waistcoats and quirky button-down shirts that are good options for office workers who don't want to sacrifice their style.
Fans of unusual tees should check out tiny boutique ATT Production (Shop 404, 4/F, tel: 2368 8439). The designers, who work in store, have sewn transparent plastic images onto a cool collection of unusual tees.
For accessories, be sure to check out Fat Bo Gao (Shop 30, G/F, tel: 3571 9968) for new and vintage accessories.
As I left, I spotted Chui and Sammi (above). I like that his colourful umbrella matched his shoes.
